What is the difference between Burgundy and Bordeaux?
The Burgundy bowl is round and wide and suits aromatic grapes such as pinot noir. The Bordeaux bowl is taller and straighter and guides the wine deeper into the mouth, which softens the tannins of cabernet sauvignon or syrah.
How many cl is a red wine glass?
Most red wine glasses sit between 40 and 75 cl. Burgundy models go up to 96 cl. For one series that handles everything, 43 to 55 cl is the safest choice: big enough to swirl and not so big that it looks empty.
How much wine do you pour into a glass?
About a fifth of the bowl, in other words up to the widest point of the glass. In a 55 cl bowl that comes to just over ten centilitres. The empty space above is not wasted, as that is where the aromas collect.
Does red wine need decanting first?
Only if it is young and firm. Half an hour in a decanter softens tannin faster than an hour in the open bottle. Old wine is decanted for a different reason, namely to leave the sediment behind.
Can red wine glasses go in the dishwasher?
Almost all glasses in this collection can. Choose a short programme at a moderate temperature, make sure the stems do not touch and take the glasses out straight away, as lingering steam settles as limescale.
