The story
The Daiquiri comes from the Cuban mining village of the same name, where around 1898 an American engineer mixed rum, lime and sugar to beat the heat. More than twenty years later, bartender Constantino Ribalaigua of El Floridita in Havana put the first version in a blender. The frozen daiquiri was born, and Hemingway became a regular. The strawberry version came much later: when the electric blender conquered every American kitchen in the 1960s and 1970s, fruit was added. That is how a sleek three-part classic became the most ordered summer drink by the pool.
The right glass
A frozen daiquiri belongs in a wide, shallow stemmed glass: a margarita or daiquiri glass. The wide bowl gives you room to spoon in the mixture without compacting it, and the stem keeps your hand from warming the ice. Allow 27 to 33 cl. Place the glass in the freezer for half an hour before you start; this saves minutes before your daiquiri begins to melt.

The right tools
For a Strawberry Daiquiri, besides the glass, you use a jigger for precise measuring, a citrus juicer, and glass straws. These are the bar tools we use ourselves; you can find everything in our bar tools & cocktail sets.

Variations & twists
Replace the strawberries with mango, banana, or raspberry and you have a new recipe in one go. A splash of strawberry liqueur deepens the flavor; a basil leaf or half a red chili pepper in the blender gives it a surprisingly grown-up twist. Prefer the original, crisp version? Find it with the classic Daiquiri. More inspiration in all cocktail recipes.
Serving tip
Use frozen strawberries instead of fresh: they are flavorful all year round, and because they are frozen, you need less ice. The result is a fuller, less watery daiquiri. Always blend briefly. Blending for too long makes the mixture warm and thin.
Good to know
Frozen strawberry daiquiri in balance
In this frozen strawberry daiquiri recipe, one cup of crushed ice creates the texture of soft snow. If your mixture is still too thin, don't add extra ice but a few frozen strawberries: they thicken it without diluting the flavor. Too thick? Half a centiliter of lime juice makes it pourable again and sharpens the flavor. Always taste before serving, because the sweetness depends on your strawberries: ripe ones need less sugar syrup than pale ones.
Making a Malibu strawberry daiquiri
The Strawberry Daiquiri cocktail is well suited to replacing the rum. For a Malibu strawberry daiquiri, replace part of the 5 cl white rum with Malibu, a coconut liqueur made from rum that is sweeter and lighter than regular white rum. This shifts the overall flavor toward strawberry and coconut. Keep in mind that you will then need less sugar syrup and that the lime juice becomes more important for keeping everything fresh. If you replace all of it, little rum character remains; half and half keeps the base recognizable.
Frequently asked questions
Which glass do you use for a Strawberry Daiquiri?
A wide margarita or daiquiri glass on a stem, holding 27 to 33 cl. View our daiquiri glasses.
Fresh or frozen strawberries?
Frozen wins almost every time: consistent flavor, and they cool the drink as well, so you need less ice. Fresh strawberries at their best (June to July) are more aromatic, though.
Can it also be made without a blender?
Yes. Blend the strawberries with a hand blender, shake them with the rum, lime and syrup, and pour over crushed ice. You won't get a frozen texture, but you will get the same flavor.
Can you make a Strawberry Daiquiri alcohol-free?
Yes: leave out the rum or replace it with 0.0 rum and add a splash of apple juice for body. This is also the most child-friendly frozen drink there is.
