Balloon glass or tall glass for gin and tonic?
A balloon glass captures the aroma of the botanicals and leaves room for garnish. A tall narrow glass holds on to the carbonation for longer. If bubbles matter most, go tall; if aroma matters most, choose the balloon.
How much ice goes into a gin and tonic?
Fill the glass about three-quarters full with ice. That seems like a lot, but a solid mass of ice melts more slowly than a few loose cubes, so your drink stays cold longer and dilutes less quickly.
Why do you pour tonic down the side of the glass?
To spare the carbonation. Pouring straight into the glass knocks the bubbles out, leaving the gin and tonic tasting flat within minutes. Pouring down the side or over a bar spoon keeps the fizz intact.
Are these glasses dishwasher safe?
Yes, provided the balloon glass sits in a rack where the bowl cannot tip. Both glasses are thin-walled, so keep them from touching each other and avoid putting ice into a glass that has just come out of a hot cycle.
