Which wines should you aerate and which not?
Aerating helps with young, firm red wine that still smells closed. Old wine is fragile and loses scent instead, so leave it alone. As a rule you do not aerate white or sparkling wine either.
Does an aerator work as well as a decanter?
For most young wines it does, because the wine draws in air while you pour instead of standing for a quarter of an hour. A decanter remains handier when you want to separate a bottle with sediment from its deposit.
Does an aerator fit every wine bottle?
It fits almost all standard bottles, because they share the same neck size. Thick Burgundy bottles and some screw-cap bottles differ, so there check that the pourer clamps tightly enough not to leak.
How do you clean a wine aerator?
Rinse it through with warm water straight after use, from top to bottom, and let it drain upside down. Dried-on wine blocks the air holes, and then it no longer draws in air while you pour.
