What is Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal?

What the charred casks do to this cognac

1738 Accord Royal is a blend of carefully selected eaux-de-vie aged in charred oak casks. Charring the inside of the cask draws more sweet, toasted notes from the wood. As a result, this cognac is notably rich, smooth and aromatic, with toffee, brioche and plum instead of the VSOP's fresh apricot.

It is also aged longer: the blend contains eaux-de-vie up to twenty years old, while the VSOP stops at fourteen. Like all Rémy Martin cognacs, the grapes come from Grande and Petite Champagne. At 40% alcohol, it is just as strong as the VSOP, but feels rounder and fuller on the palate.

How to drink it

How to get the most out of 1738

1738 is made to be enjoyed neat. Precisely because it is so smooth, it also works well over ice or in a simple cocktail.

Neat in a tulip glass

Pour 30 ml into a tulip-shaped cognac glass and let it stand for a few minutes. Smell first at the rim, then deeper into the glass: this is how you taste the difference between toffee and fruit.

With one ice cube

Pour 40 ml over a large, clear ice cube in a heavy tumbler. The melting water gradually opens up the cognac; after five minutes, it tastes lighter and fruitier.

Cognac Old Fashioned

Briefly stir 50 ml 1738, 5 ml sugar syrup and 2 dashes of Angostura with ice in a tumbler, with a twist of orange zest. The cognac's toffee notes do the rest.

Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal contains 40% alcohol, just like the VSOP and XO. Only the Tercet is stronger, at 42%.
What is the difference between Rémy Martin 1738 and VSOP?
The 1738 is aged in toasted barrels and contains eaux-de-vie up to twenty years old; the VSOP goes up to fourteen years. As a result, the 1738 is richer, sweeter and smoother, with toffee and plum, while the VSOP is fresher and fruitier.
Is 1738 Accord Royal an XO?
No. The 1738 sits between the VSOP and the XO. The XO is a blend of eaux-de-vie aged from 10 to 37 years and has a deeper, more complex flavor.
How do you drink Rémy Martin 1738?
Neat at room temperature from a tulip-shaped cognac glass, or with one large ice cube in a tumbler. In cocktails, it works best in stirred classics such as the Old Fashioned and the Sazerac.

Cognac does not spoil. Store the bottle upright, tightly sealed and out of the sun; the flavor will then remain good for years. A nearly empty bottle may lose some aroma over time.
