What is Laphroaig?

Islay's most distinctive whisky

Laphroaig (pronounced: la-frojg) is a single malt whisky from the Scottish island of Islay, made since 1815 at a distillery by the sea near Port Ellen. The name means something like 'the beautiful hollow by the broad bay'. Laphroaig still malts some of its barley itself and dries it over peat fires, giving the whisky its intense smoky flavour.

The result is a whisky unlike any other: peat smoke, iodine, tar, seaweed and salt, with a surprising sweetness underneath. Laphroaig calls itself 'the most richly flavoured Scotch whisky in the world' and has held Charles's Royal Warrant since 1994, when he was still Prince of Wales. The brand is part of Beam Suntory.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Laphroaig

Drink Laphroaig neat, at room temperature, from a glass that concentrates the aromas. A drop of water opens it up; ice closes it down.

Neat, with a drop of water

Pour 30 ml into a tulip-shaped tasting glass and let it sit for a few minutes. Then add a few drops of water: the smoke softens and the sweet vanilla comes through.

On the rocks

You can, but in moderation: one large ice cube in a tumbler chills the whisky without diluting it too quickly. The ice softens the smoke, which some people prefer.

Glass: tumbler →

Penicillin

50 ml blended Scotch, 20 ml lemon juice, 20 ml honey-ginger syrup, shaken, and topped with 10 ml Laphroaig as a smoky 'float'. The modern classic with Islay whisky.

What percentage of alcohol does Laphroaig contain?
Laphroaig 10 Years and Select are 40% ABV. Quarter Cask, Lore and 10 Sherry Oak are 48% ABV. The 10 Years Cask Strength is bottled at cask strength, around 58%; the exact percentage varies by batch.
How do you pronounce Laphroaig?
Roughly like “la-FROJG,” with the stress on the second syllable. The name comes from Scottish Gaelic and means something like “the beautiful hollow by the broad bay.”
Why does Laphroaig taste like smoke and a hospital?
The barley is dried over peat fires, causing smoky compounds (phenols) to enter the whisky. Islay peat contains a lot of seaweed and moss, which creates the characteristic iodine and “medicinal” aroma. Laphroaig uses heavily peated barley, giving it one of Scotland’s most pronounced flavors.
What is the difference between Laphroaig 10 and Quarter Cask?
The 10 Years matures for ten years in standard ex-bourbon casks and has an ABV of 40%. The Quarter Cask has no age statement, is finished in small quarter casks (more contact with the wood), and is bottled at 48%. It is fuller, sweeter and woodier, with just as much smoke.
Is Laphroaig suitable for beginners?
As a first whisky, it is a gamble: many people find the smoke too intense at first. If you want to get to know Islay, start with the Select or drink the 10 Years with a few drops of water. Once someone is converted, they often want nothing else.
Which Laphroaig is best as a gift?
Laphroaig Lore or the 10 Years Sherry Oak: both richer and more complex than the regular 10, and beautifully packaged. For a true enthusiast, the 10 Years Cask Strength is a classic. For a gift under 50 euros, the 10 Years itself is the safest choice.
