What is Malibu?

Caribbean rum with coconut, made for mixing

Malibu is a liqueur made from white Caribbean rum and coconut, with 21% alcohol. The brand was launched in 1982 with one goal: to make a Piña Colada easier. Instead of measuring rum and coconut cream separately, everything came in one bottle. The rum comes from Barbados, where Malibu is still made today.

With its low ABV and sweet coconut flavor, Malibu is the most approachable rum at the bar and a staple at summer parties. Besides the original, there are fruity flavors such as Strawberry and Watermelon, as well as ready-to-drink canned cocktails. Malibu has been part of Pernod Ricard since 2005.

What percentage of alcohol is in Malibu?
Malibu Coconut contains 21% alcohol, as do the Strawberry and Watermelon flavors. That is approximately half the alcohol content of regular rum. Ready-to-drink canned cocktails, such as Malibu Piña Colada, contain 5%.
Is Malibu rum?
Officially, Malibu is a liqueur: white Caribbean rum from Barbados, blended with coconut and sugar to 21% alcohol. Because of its low alcohol content and sweet taste, it cannot be called rum, but its base is real rum.
Where does Malibu come from?
Malibu is made in Barbados, in the Caribbean. The brand was launched in 1982 and is named after the beach in California, as a symbol of sun and summer.
What is the best way to drink Malibu?
Mixed and served with plenty of ice: with pineapple juice (the classic), cola, soda, or in a Piña Colada. Malibu is too sweet for most people to drink neat. Store the bottle in the refrigerator so it is ready to serve.
What is the difference between Malibu and Batida de Coco?
Batida de Coco is a Brazilian coconut liqueur made with cachaça, cream, and 16% alcohol. Malibu is a 21% rum liqueur without cream, clear and fresher. You can use either for a Piña Colada; Malibu makes a lighter cocktail.
How long does an opened bottle of Malibu keep?
Approximately one year after opening if stored in a cool, dark place and tightly sealed. Malibu contains no cream and does not spoil quickly, but it gradually loses its fresh coconut flavor.
