What is The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve?

A tribute to the founder

Founder's Reserve is named after George Smith, who founded The Glenlivet in 1824. This whisky uses special oak casks that provide The Glenlivet's fruity house character, complemented by unused American oak casks that add a hint of creamy sweetness. The whisky is still distilled in narrow, lantern-shaped copper stills.

There is no age statement on the bottle. The master distiller selects the casks for their flavor, not the number of years. As a result, Founder's Reserve is lighter, sweeter and creamier than the 12 Years, with orange, pear and caramel. A notably smooth malt: great neat, but especially good in a highball or a refreshing cocktail.

Everything about The Glenlivet →
What percentage alcohol does The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve have?
Founder's Reserve is 40% ABV, just like the 12, 15 and 18 Years. Only the 21 Years is stronger, at 43%.
What is the difference between Founder's Reserve and The Glenlivet 12?
The 12 Years has an age statement and is fuller and rounder. Founder's Reserve has no age statement, is partly matured in new American oak, and is lighter, sweeter and creamier, with orange, pear and caramel.
Why doesn't Founder's Reserve have an age statement?
Because the casks are selected for their flavor rather than their age. This allows the master distiller to create the same smooth, fruity style every time.
What do you mix Founder's Reserve with?
With sparkling water for a highball, with ginger beer or ginger ale for a Mule, or with lemon and sugar in a Whisky Sour. It is light enough not to overpower the mixer.
Is Founder's Reserve suitable as a first single malt?
Yes. It is smooth, sweet and has no smoke or sharp oak notes. Neat or over ice, it is an approachable introduction to single malt.
