Flügel
The red bottle that makes the rounds at every party. Everything about what’s in it, the alcohol percentage, the cap tradition and how to serve Flügel ice-cold.

Vodka, energy and a cap on your nose
Flügel is a Dutch vodka-based shot with the flavor of an energy drink, sold in small red 2 cl bottles. The idea originated in the 1990s on a beer mat, during a vacation by four friends in the Austrian mountains; the first bottles were sold in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Flügel is now available in nearly twenty countries and is a staple at parties, festivals and après-ski. Flügel is German for “wings”.
With 10% alcohol, Flügel is mild, and its sweet, fruity flavor makes it easy to drink in one go. The bottles also contain caffeine (25 mg per 100 ml). The tradition: tap the bottle on the bar, place the cap on your nose, toast and drink it all in one go. Flügel is made by FLS Company, the same manufacturer as Boswandeling.
In brief
What Flügel packages are available?
Flügel comes in one flavor; you only choose how many bottles you need. Boswandeling is made by the same producer.

Flügel 10 x 2 cl
The handy box with ten bottles for an evening at home or a small party.

Flügel 40 x 2 cl
The large box for festivals, bachelor parties and après-ski. Better value per bottle.

Boswandeling
Cream liqueur with banana and coconut, the other party drink from the same distillery. Serve ice-cold as a shot or with cola.
Plan on two to three bottles per person for an evening of partying.
Sweet, fruity and fresh like an energy drink
Energy drink & red fruit
The aroma of a can of energy drink: sweet, slightly bubblegum-like, with red fruit.
Sweet and light
Thin and sweet, with the familiar energy-drink flavor and barely any taste of alcohol. Best served ice-cold.
Short and fresh
A short, sweet finish with a slight tingling from the caffeine. Makes you want the next one right away.
Flavor profile of Flügel straight from the refrigerator, ice-cold. At room temperature, it is much sweeter.
Three ways to drink Flügel
Drink Flügel ice-cold and in one go. Chill the bottles in the refrigerator for at least a few hours or for fifteen minutes in a bucket of ice water.
From the bottle, cap on your nose
Unscrew the cap, press it onto your nose, drink the bottle in one go, and leave the cap in place. Whoever keeps the cap on their nose the longest wins. That's how it's done.
Glass: shot glass →In a shot glass
Pour a bottle into a chilled 2- to 4-cl shot glass and serve them on a tray. Tidier at a party at home and easier to toast together.
Glass: shot glass →Flügel bomb
Drop a bottle of Flügel into half a glass of energy drink or beer and drink it all in one go. The Dutch version of the Jägerbomb.
Jägerbomb recipe →Long Flügel: how to turn it into a highball
Flügel is made as a shot, but with lemon-lime soda and ice, it becomes a long drink that you can sip more slowly.
What you need
2 bottles of Flügel (4 cl total), well chilled
12 cl cold lemon-lime soda, such as 7-Up or Sprite
A highball glass full of ice cubes
A lime wedge
How to make it
1. Chill the bottles and soda in the refrigerator for at least a few hours.
2. Fill a highball glass to the rim with ice cubes.
3. Pour the Flügel over the ice.
4. Top up with the soda and stir briefly once.
5. Squeeze the lime wedge over the glass and place it on the rim.
Tip
Keep the soda cold and pour slowly so it stays fizzy. Prefer it as a shot? Use a chilled shot glass of 2 to 4 cl. Find more ideas among the party cocktails.
